About Our Mission
“Independent Unity is dedicated to the advancement of spiritual understanding and an enhanced awareness of the omnipotence of God expressing as the divine essence of every individual.”
This statement from our bylaws is a good summary of our organizational mission. We have not set out to build a mega church. Our focus is on the presentation of ideas that encourage and stimulate a deeper spiritual awareness in those who find this ministry.
I clearly remember discovering the first spiritually based book that truly opened my eyes. It was small with a nondescript cover that for some reason drew my attention from the top shelf of a public library. Lessons In Truth was the title. I opened it to a random page and instantly knew I had to take it home. As I read in my quiet private moments, the words on every page were alive with inspiration and a level of spiritual logic I had not found in my traditional Christian upbringing.
The point is, when a person is ready, it doesn’t matter what the bearer of the message looks like or how that contact is made. What matters is what happens when the student and teacher meet. When Jesus said my sheep hear my voice, he was referring to this dynamic. When we encounter a teaching that resonates with us at a soul level, we know it. It feels like a homecoming.
Unlike most mainstream religions, Independent Unity does not tell people what to think. We teach people how to think. What does this mean? Do you think like a physical being that may have a soul? Or do you think like a spiritual being that is currently expressing through a body? These are two very different scenarios. Most people think from the standpoint of their physicality. Our mission is to help you learn to think from the standpoint of your spirituality.
Our understanding of meditation and prayer is based on the eternal spiritual union with God shared by every person. When Jesus said that the kingdom of God is within, we believe he meant it literally. We are each an expression of God, spiritually complete in every way. That we may have lost sight of this relationship of oneness is a common condition. Like the prodigal son, we may have strayed from our spiritual center. The mission of this ministry is to help people discover their way back home.
It is my sincere hope that something you find on this site will assist you in finding your way home.
