Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
“The true significance of the word meek in the Bible is a mental attitude for which there is no other single word available, and it is this mental attitude which is the secret of ‘prosperity’ or success in prayer. It is a combination of open-mindedness, faith in God, and the realization that the Will of God for us is always something joyous and interesting and vital, and much better than anything we could think of ourselves.” —Emmet Fox
The receptive state of meekness toward God is an open door of the mind, an attitude that allows something more than our current understanding to transpire in our affairs. Fox goes on to say, “This state of mind also includes a perfect willingness to allow this Will of God to come about in whatever way Divine Wisdom considers to be best, rather than in some particular way that we have chosen for ourselves.”
For many, this might be one of the most difficult aspects of spiritual teachings. We are told that God helps those who help themselves and then we are told to let go and let God. These are not contradictory statements, however, for there is a time to act and a time to be still. The meek, receptive attitude toward God’s presence and loving guidance helps us to put God first in all we do.
The promise in this beatitude is that spiritual meekness assures balance and success in our material endeavors. This is what it means to inherit the earth. Putting God before your own ego, seeing God as your unfailing guide, trusting God to reveal to you right action in all your affairs is the assurance that things unfold in your life in divine order and in perfect harmony.
As you awaken each morning, turn your attention to God as your unfailing guide through each activity of your day. When you enter each new activity, affirm, Thy will is being done. Do what is at hand as if God were directing your every move. This meekness toward God will assure your success in all you do.
